Each winter our lake at work gets visited by greylag geese. They flock around on the fields that lead down to the lake and walk about on their orange legs that are so characteristic for the birds. I always show the flock to the kids, because they often get amazed by how big these geese are. Believe it or not, since the young kids are used to seeing birds on a distance, they sometimes forget that some species can actually be rather large when you get closer.
The most intimidating part is when the group decides to spread their wings and fly up in a loud trumpet-like call. Just as clumsy they seem waddling about on the meadows, just as elegant are they in the air. I am going to miss then when the spring comes.
